Indoor climbing is a safe and challenging sport
|
Climbing is a sport with the risk of serious injury or even death. Make always sure that you have the necessary skills, knowledge and equipment for safe climbing. Always follow the safety instructions and manuals for the equipment and practise belaying and climbing techniques in a safe environment.
You are using the premises of Kuntokeskus Wolf at your own risk. Kuntokeskus Wolf is not responsible for possible accidents or loss or damage to personal property. Kuntokeskus Wolf warns the users that climbing above your own personal level and abusing the climbing equipment might lead to serious injury. Indoor climbing will not provide you with sufficient skills for outdoor climbing.
If you want to use the climbing premises of Kuntokeskus Wolf, it is required that you fill out the registration form and that you either assure that you possess the necessary skills and knowledge for safe climbing or that you participate in our safety training. Every time you visit the climbing gym you are asked to register at the reception desk.
If you have any kind of medical condition that might affect your climbing, please notify your fellow climbers and the personnel every time you arrive at the location.
GENERAL
- You must always pay attention to the other climbers. Be aware of descending/falling climbers or falling objects. Always know what is happening above you. Be polite.
- All problems, potential dangers on the wall or equipment or close call situations have to be reported to the staff immediately.
- The climbers have to be aware of that the holds might come loose or break. When you notice a loose or broken hold, report it to the personnel immediately (there is a chart on the notice board to mark the hold). You may not handle the holds or the structures yourself.
- All of the equipment must be UIAA approved.
- Before any climbing with ropes, both the belayer and climber will check their equipment, knots and the belay device (so called crosscheck) and that the rope is in good condition and is not twisted. If you are unsure about the condition of the rope, inform the personnel immediately.
- It is forbidden to use loose or liquid chalk. Only ball chalk is allowed.
- It is forbidden to remove the topropes from the routes. It is also forbidden to untie or tie any of the knots. When you leave the route, place the rope ends close to the wall so that no-one will step on them.
- Do not leave any objects on the mattresses. Place the objects on the chairs or the wooden floor.
- It is forbidden to enter the climbing premises with outdoor shoes. You have to have either climbing or gym shoes. Leave your outdoor shoes either to the locker room or on top of the stairs.
- Group leaders are responsible for their group’s safety and behaviour.
- Only the instructors authorized by Kuntokeskus Wolf may teach anything safety related at the Kuntokeskus Wolf’s climbing gym. If you want your friends to learn the basics of safe climbing, please direct them to the safety training.
- Children under the age of 15 may only use the premises with their guardian or in a supervised group and on the guardian’s responsibility. All users below the age of 18 must have their guardians permission to use the premises. When climbing with children you should try to avoid the busiest hours.
- It is strictly forbidden to climb under the influence.
- Kuntokeskus Wolf’s personnel may remove a person from the premises when necessary. The management of Kuntokeskus Wolf may also ban the person from any further use of the premises.
- Kuntokeskus Wolf may change the terms of use. The updated terms are shown on the notice board. The client is expected to keep up do date on the changes
CLIMBING AND BELAYING
- In top-rope climbing the rope is attached to the harness with a carabiner. The ropes have ready made double eight knots which may not be opened.
- Allowed belay devices are ATC, I’D, GRIGRI or other device produced for belaying. The figure eight device is for descending only and is not allowed as a belay device at Kuntokeskus Wolf. You should always read carefully the user manuals of your belay device and ask for assistance when in doubt. I’D and GRIGRI are not recommended for lead climbing. Climbers with disabilities that affect the consciousness, reaction or coordination (such as epilepsy) are recommended to belay with an I’D or a GRIGRI at any times.
- When belaying or lowering a climber the belayer must stand close enough to the wall. If the belayer is standing too far away from the wall, the belayer might lose his or her balance or the rope might run out when lowering the climber.
- It is strictly forbidden to sit or lie down while belaying. The rope must be tight enough to prevent dangerously long falls. To avoid pendulums keep strictly to the route line.
- It is not allowed to climb on top of the bouldering wall. It is forbidden to use your own crashpads. When bouldering on the rope wall your waist should not raise above the first bolt line and you must give way to rope climbers. Always be sure of a secure landing. Climbing above the bouldering line without belaying (soloing) is strictly forbidden and will lead to removal from the premises. You may not belay yourself.
- When lead climbing you have to use your own rope and attach the rope to the harness with a double eight knot. Leave at least 10 cm extra after tying the knot. You have to be sure that the rope is long enough also for a safe descent. All of the quickdraws on the route have to be clipped starting from the first one. When a lead rope is used as a top rope, there has to be at least two belay points from which the rope is secured (f.e. quickdraws). It is not allowed to fasten two ropes into the same carabiner or anchor.
VOCABULARY
Top anchor = the point where the top rope is attached. Provides a carabiner for lead climbers.
Routeline = the track between the top anchor and the floor, to the limits of which the routes are planned and the climber has to stick to. Horizontally it is limited to the neighbouring top anchors at its widest.
Top rope = the rope passes through the top anchor before going down to the climber and at the other end, the belayer.
Bouldering = climbing without ropes below the first quickdraw or belay point.
Lead climbing = the rope goes straight from the climber to the belayer. The climber clips the rope to the quickdraws when passing them.
A quickdraw = a belay point for lead climbing that consists of two snapgate carabiners connected by a short, pre-sewn loop of webbing, to which the lead climber clips the rope every one or two meters
